Cr Robson said there was an impression abroad that Council did not wish to build this bridge, They were anxious that the work should be done, and would carry it out as soon as they could contribute their portion oF the cost. The Chairman snid the money -was 'available. Cr Moore thought the Council should express willingness to erect the bridge, provided it did not cost more than' £200, Cr Nash thought there were other

works more urgent than this, and at present they could not spnre £100, It was resolved to erect the bridge when Council were in funds. Mr J. M. Chambers wrote complaining of the bad state of the roadway to the Parkes' furnace at fcarangahake. He had recently called for tenders for the carting of 200 tons of material, and found that contractors wanted large prices owing to bad roadway. He also asked permission to lay down 75 chains of tramline between the Woodstock mine and the bridge, and that Borne of the steep hills on the Paeroa side of the Mackaytown road be cut down. Cr Nash said that about 200 fascines on the worst parts of the road would meet the requirements. Accounts to .'he amount of £2GO Gs were recommended for payment. Th 1 Chairman moved the adoption of the Finance Committee's report. Cr Deaile objected to the payment of N, Dickey for hi^ contract in full, as his penalty for the contract being o\qi' time had not boon paid. The time had been exceeded by IS days. Cr Robson thought Council were moving in the right direction, bufc thought {[that N. Dickey's account should be pai<? this time, and all contractors warned that in future all contivcts must be completed in time. Cr Moore proposed as an amendment, That the balance sheet be not passed and that penalties in the cases of the overdue time contiacts of M<f.rs Bein, Quinn, Dickey, and Barnes, be enforced. This was seconded by Cr Quinn, but was lost on the casting vote of the chairman, who then declared the finance committee's repot t passed. Hoad to Tui : — Mr C A. Comes waited upon the Council with respect to the road to the Tui, lately surveyed by the Engineer. He contended that it was not going in the right direction, and had not been started high enough. If i f . hail been commenced several hundred feet further up instead of at the corner of the bush it would have been of use. It did not go above Camerons point, whilst the grading bad been worked upwards instead of downwards, which, he consideied, was a great mistake. He thought that if any money was spent on the road as now surveyed iC would be wa»ied, Mr Tetley, in reply to Mr Comes' remarks denied that the road was incomplete and had been wrongly graded. He had no instructions to proceed above Camerons point. On the motion of Cr Quinn, seconded by Cr Moore, i+ was resolved, That the Engineers' report and plan re road at Tui Creok be referred to the Board of Works.
