MINING NEWS. WAIORONGOMAI.

Te Aroha Silver and Gold Mining Company : — The roasting furnace and the whole of the tailings plant (including 57 berdans), is employed steadily night and day treating trail ings from the New Find portion of the Co.'s property. The contractor for the construction of {he new water race extension is making good headway with the work in hand. Work in the Alines : — The reef in the 450-feet level in the New Find was cut on Monday lasf, and a contract has been let to O'KoefTu and party, to drive 100 feet on the line of reef. A contract has also been let to the same party to drive through the roof to the western wall. The quart/, now coming to grass from the stopes ( Maicey and party, couti ac^nrs), still continues to show t^old. Witpinnn and party, routi actors for driving the 1 900 feet main adit level, are making fair progress with the work in hand. The drive being put in on the May Queen roof is progressing satisfactorily ; and the reef {which in our issue of Saturday last was reporte 1 as bein^c rather pinched), has, within the last two or three days, considerably improved in she, as it is further driven upon The drive on the Galena reef is being pushed ahead, and this reef is now a fine looking body of ore. The winze in the Silver King was holed through on Thursday last, and there will now be abundance of ventilation for driving on the reef both nortli and south. The drive north on the Silver King is now in* a distance of 40 feet, and the reef which is about 6 foot wide, shows a little sulphide of silver every breaking down. The drive south on the same roof is also | in about 40 feet, the reef being about | 4 feet wide (Leith is the contractor for i both these drives). Colonist Mine : In this mine the reef having been cut by Hughes ami party (contractors), they are now driving on the course of the reef, and the stone broken out is of a very kindly nature. j The winze being sunk to connect this j lercl is now down a distance of about 8 foet ; and good gold was seen in the , stone at the last breaking down. Generally speaking, mining is progressing satisfactorily on the Waiorongomai portion of the gold field, and the advent of Mr W. ft. Wilson and the large expenditure of money now going on in connection with the mines, has quite transformed the place, and infused new life into the district generally. Two new butchers, another baker, begides several other small shops have been opened at Waiorongomai within the past month, whilst the brewers show a keen desire to place further inducements in the way of the residents, or as they would probably term it, ' provide additional accommodation/ and no less than three applications for new publican's licenses will be dealt with by the Te Aroha Licensing Commissioners to-day. (ireat interest is being evinced in the approaching visit of the celebrated mining expert from America, Mr Howell, who is to arrive in Auckland from Sm Francisco, by the s.s. Alameda, on the 21st inst. Mr Howell comes to inspect the plane, mines, ore, and generally, on behalf of the Te Aroha 8. and G.M. Co., and to advise the directors what class of plant to erect for the most advantageous treatment of their ores on a large scale. But no doubt Mr Howell will visit other parts of the district as well, and his visit will undoubtedly prove a matter of great importance Two of the Sydney directors of the Te Aroha S. and G,M. Co. are to arrive in Auckland on the 18th inst., viz, Messrs McGregor and Jamieson, and will, accompanied by the Auckland director Mr J. McCosh Clark, accompany Mr llowcll on his visit of inspection. Mr W. lv. Wilson is not expected over just at present.
