The Chairman : I remarked at Ihe hist meeting, bcfoie Te Aroha Town Distiict was constituted, the Council could rale the Te Aroha Hiding « s hfretofore, but now owing (o the Town Distiict they could not rate it beyond in the £ in any one year. Cr Murphy • I wish it distinctly understood I do not wish the ratepayers at a distance to have to contiibuteto this work; what I desire is that lmli'the cost of keeping this poition of the road in repair be paid out the goldfields revenue, seeing that four fifths of the traffic over it is goldfields traffic. The Chaiiman : We can't help levying rate. The rates we are levying now have been levied to pay oil' a dead hoise,ie. liability incurred in this coiner of the county. ; Cr Gould : — I have paid the County £250 in rates, in return for which, my distiict baa only leceived £10. Where has the money gone to ? Undoubtedly all spent in IV. Aroha Riding ; whilst the ratepayers in Patetere and Taotoaioa had some of them paid as high as ,■(•7oo in rates, all of which had been spent in connection with Te Aroha Riding. Cr Murphy proposed and Cr Mills seconded an amendment as regards the | latter part of the resolution so as to road !as follows :—: — and that at least one half the cost of constmction and maintenance, (being occasioned by the gold fickle tiaflic,) be paid out of goldfields revenue. Only the mover and seconder of the amendment voting in favour of it, it was d eel a led kst, and the original motion was then put and canied. Cr ITeany whilst seconding the proposition, protested against the manner in which the vote of the ratepayers had been taken ie this loan ; and chaiaeterispd it as a hole and coiner affair ; and that the road would simply henefit thcT. Y. Land Co. Cr Tleany asked why Lichfield. fifteen miles distant fiom any of the settleis, had been chosen as the polling place, and not Oxford ; and said only Mr Oeo. Walker, and his son and daughtei came theie to vote. Oidinary Meeting — The minutes of the last monthly meeting weie read and continued. Deputation. — Messrs IT. MeLiver ami T. Mr Mnnio : stated that the settlers had already expended £90 in improving the ioad, nud for the next ten >eirs would have a like sum allowed them out of their rent-* oich year by Government for load woik. IE the Council granted the money now asked for, it was not likely they would be asked to expend any more money on the load for many years to come, Cr Murphy «poke in support of the request, and said he did not think Council would be troubled about this ro.id again if the proposed woik was now done, and moved that £30 be nr.iniul foi tlio purpose named, (bcins; amount of Kngineci V estimate); seconded by Cr_ Mills. The Committee would like to see all the Councillor present. On behalf of the miners he would like to say they felt the Council had always done nearly all they had nsked for, and proved a good friend to the gold field, and for doing so bad incwred much abuse from residents in other Ridings. The Committee desired that tho County Chairman would take the chair that evening as they would like the Cis. to be present on tho occasion of commemorating what was believed to be the eve of prosperous times on the goldfield. The Chairman expressed his thanks to the Committee for asking him to preside but said ho must decline the honour of being chairman on the occasion. Resolved to adjoin n Council meeting from G p.m. till 9 a.m Friday. Correspondence. — A considerable amount of coircspondence both outward and inward was lead ; and included an application f'om D. Craig, Wairakau, asking for an expenditure of £3 on uud loading to his house. Request granted. J. Munro wrote offering to look aftei the donkey engine on tho tramway free of chaige for a time. Cr Mills said it. would not do to leave the matter in the hands of any Tom, Dick, or ll airy, who applied ; and he would suggest thai tl.e matter of looking
the engine he left in the hands of the Engineer ; which Council nsroed to do. An application from J. ft. Rowo for slaughter house license for Section J2, Block 1 1 Te Aroha Survey District was gi anted. Waikato Hospital aiid Charitable Aid 'BofUfl. — From Secretary of the W. IT. and C. A. Rpsolvcd, That one half the amount due hy Piako be paid at onceRoad from Murphy's Landing to Waioronecomai. — Cr Mills laid a petition on the table, having thirty-five signatures of residents of Waiorongomai attached, requesting Council to metal the road from Murphy's Landing to Waiorongomai township, (via the new road through Wilson's paddock) as it wag piobiible there would slioitly be a large amount of heavy machinery to be carted to Waiorongomai from the landing. Cr Mills said the petition had only been given him yesteiday, prior to which he had heard nothing, of it. Pie did not approve o ! the proposal to metal the new road, which was not ; pioperly consolidated yet ; he thought if the road from the Landiugtoits junction with the main road were metalled it would do, and spoke oC the necessity of the road being repaired, estimated cost iiio. Resolved that the petition be considered at next Council meeting. Bridge over Waihou. — Cr Gould said it had been proposed to erect a bridge over Waihon nwev at Murphy's landing. It might seem rather an out of the way place for a bridge, but he was in favour of enquiry being made as to the probable cost of doing as suggested. At present not only had the Council to pay 2s a day as subsidy to Cr Murphy's son for keeping the punt open, but the settlers had also to pay Gd or Is every time they used the punt ; and these expenses would cover the inteiest on cost of bridge ; and lie thought the settlers might be glad to contiibute towards the cost, as it would be a great convenience, etc. Resolved, That the Engineer be instiucted to prupaie an appioxiinate estimate of probable cost.
