SIR GEORGE GREY AS GOVERNOR. WANGANUI CALLS ON AUCKLAND TO LEAD.
Wa>*oanui, March 22. The Wanganui " Herald " (Mr Ballanee's paper) says : " Governor Grey will always be a notable name in the annals of New Zealand, and ifc would be an interesting addition to our history if we were to have a second period'of ' Governor Grey ' virtually determined by the people. The proposal made by The Auckland Stab is a perfectly reasonable one. Jf the people of .New Zealand think Sir George Grey would make a good Governor, why should they not petition in that behalf V It would serve a double object. It would show Downingstreet that we claimed the right to have a voice in the appointment of our Governer, and it would load probably to a change in the Constitution by which the head of the colony should be elected by the people. The personal part of the question is not of so much moment. Sir George Grey is an old man, and has nearly run his course, but it would be a fitting termination to an extraordinary career, and an honourable roward for many services on behalf of the colony. The petition should be very largely signed. It would probably, in tho true sense of the term, be a 'monster petition.' The principle really involved is whether the people should have the right to choose their own Governor, or whether tho Imperial Government should continue to appoint broken-down noblemen or played-out politicians to recruit their fortunes at the expense of tho people of the colony. Auckland, in this matter, must take the lead. It will be well supported.' 5
Aunt Mm* erva (to fashionable niece) "Do you expect to do anything in the direction of charity this winter, Clara?" Miss Clara (brightly): "Oh, yee, aunty. I am already planning my costume for the Charity Ball/
