MOUNT ALBERT LICENSING ELECTION.
Auckland, March 22. The poll for the election of a Licensing Committee for the Mount Albert District took place yesterday, and resulted in a great victory for the Temperance I'arty. The Christians' Meeting-house, New North Road, was appointed as the place of polling, Mr S. Blocking officiating as Returning Officer. Mr J. S. Cox acted as poll clerk, and Mr J. S. Duke acted as {scrutineer for Sir W. Wasteneys, and Mr Stephenson in the same capacity for Mr J. S. Kelly. Mr Ashton was sole scrutineer for the temperance party. The result of the poll must have been highly satisfactory to the members of the temperance party, as they returned their candidates with an overwhelming majority. Apparently, the residents of the Mount Albert district are not eager to have an hotel established in their midst. The temperance party worked well, but their opponents showed less activity than heretofore. At 6 p.m. the poll closed, and shortly afterwards the following results were declared : — ' H. J. B. Sellers 156 J. 11. Wallers 156 J. M. Alexander 155 J. W. James 155 Thomas Allen 153 J. S. Kelly 17 Sir William Wasteneya ... 17 W. D. Dullen 15 A3 the first five are the nominees of the temperance party, they record a great success. Mr Brooking declared the five candidates who obtained the highest number of votes duly elected ; 172 votes wero recorded, of which 3 vvere informal. It will be remembered that in 1885 a poll was taken to decide the local option question. At that time the votes in favour of an hotel wero 60, and only 66 against. Yesterday's poll should settle the question for some time to come.
