THE GREENWICH MURDER. MORE ABOUT THE CRIME.
A coßniisroNDßNT, " Voritas/' writing from Symonds-street with reference to Carroll's | confessi n to having committed tho Eltluim murder Greenwich, says : — I sec you have I .wi largely from the," WolHngton Press ov information, and, knowing your let iie to publish only what is correct, is tho only leason why 1 pen this lottcr. Lot mo suy that nearly the whole of the report in the " Press " is false, and somebody has grossly misled them in this matter. I am glad that Air Pook's cousin has put two things right, giving the murdered girl's name correctly, and also tho non-re-lationship of Pook's solicitor. Now, I would like to put a tew other mutters straight. First, tho murder was known as the Eltham tragedy, as it was committed in the parihh of Eltham, in a beautiful place known as Kidbrooke Lane, buo the spot was only a few yards out oi the Kidbrooke district. Secondly, this murder took place 17 years ago next month Uiot 19 years), and again the hammer that did tho fatal deed was not thrown over a brick wall, but in among some bushes in the ground? of Mordcn College , amuchfrequonted placo, as tho public li > - (.aright ot way through these tine gai dtt. And lastly (though I could write more ), on the evening of the day of Pook's acquittal when ho came homo they put up their shutters, for there was a vast throng a&sombled outside, but beyond hooting, yelling and gioaning, no damage was done, so i that the reported destruction of windows I and printing works is perfect tiction. I may add that there were plenty of-police at hand. I should have stated that Pook's name is Edmund Walter Pook, but he is generally called Walter. I knew 13. W Pook and also the murdered girl, as I was I living a few yards from Mr Pook's house at the time of the occurrence. Mr G oldie, of Kingsland, has in his possession photographs of the murdered girl Jane Maria Clouson, and also of the monument which was erected to her memory by public subscription. The inscription on tho monument is as follows: '"To the memory of Jane Maria Clouson, a motherless girl who was murdered in Kidbrooke Lane, Eltham, on the night of Tuesday, the 25th of April, 1871. She was taken to Guy's "Hospital, where she died on Sunday, April 30th, 1871. Aged 17. She was agreeable in manner, amiable, and affectionate in disposition. Her last words were : * Oh, let mo die. 1 May God's great pity touch his heart and lead My murderer to confess hia dreadful deed, That when the secrets of all hearts are known, Guilt and repentance may alike be shown. This monument wa9 erected by public subscription."
