OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary monthly meeting of above Council (adjourned from 3rd insfc.) was held at Paoroa on Saturday ] as t. Present Cra Nicholls, (chairman) Dearie, Moore, Strange, Kobson, Nash, and Quinn. Deputation ro Thames Ilarbour Board : — Prior to the commencement of ordinary business, Messrs F. Cock, A. Caserels, and J. Phillips, junr,, waited upon the Council as deputation ropi'esenting the Committee appointed at a recent public meoting held at Faeroa, to tako steps having Proclamation rgscihdcd, "whereby extended powers were granted somo time back to Thames Harbour Board (giving them control over the up country rivers). The deputation urged upon Council to do all in their power to havo tho Proclamation cancelled, and roferrod to tho great injustice of giving Thames Harbour Board such extension of powers, etc. Tho Council informed tho deputation they wero fully alivo to tho importance of having tho Proclamation rescinded, and assured them they had loft no stone unturned | towards having it rescinded, and would not i lose sight of the matter, and requested the deputation (o furnish them with a copy of the resolution passed at the public meeting (when they were appointed) with reference thereto. Coxrcspondenco '• Inward — Eoad to Marototo fenced off:— From Mr Jtickson, County Engineer, stating that Mr Alley had erected a who fence across a road through his (Mr Alloys hind) hitherto used by persons going to the Maiototo diggings, and suggesting Government be written to enquiring if tho road referred to were a public road or not. From Major Peel on the same subject, and stating that when he came to settle in the district lie saw in Mr Alley's house a map showing the road referred to as being laid oft', and although not a dedicated road, ho was given to understand the public had a perfect right of way by that route, and that it had been used for many years by packers and others. The writer further stated that he understood a road to the mines was now being made along the flat ; if this were done ho would be left without connectton therewith. From the Survey Department, in reply to enquiry from Council stating there was no record in the Government offices of said load being dedicated. Aid to Prospectors: — From Mines Department, stating in reply to Councils application for aid to prospectors, that at present no funds were available for further grants in aid of prospecting. County Valuation: — Mr N. Kenny wiote staling lie <oul<l not spaie nocessaiy time to carry out the duties of county valnatoi, and staling ho wished to ic^3gn the appointment. Resolved that Mr Kennys iebi«nation be accepted, and that Mr L. Jackson, County Engineer, be appointed valuator on the same terms as the appointment was held by Mr Kenny. Boad Ecpahs: — A petition was lead, signed by Me&sis John Kennedy, IST. Dickey, P. Campbell, and G. Colebrook ; requesting that £30 due Council for kauri timber be expended in improving the road from Paeroa to Wnihi. Fiom Mr {?. Thorn George, stating a laige amount of machinery, etc., was about to Le eavtcd to the Union mine, Waihi ;andiequcst- , ing that the County Engineer be instructed to meet Mr J. W. Walker and others at Waihi, to take into consideration the matter of putting the roiul and bridges, etc., in repair. Resolved on the motion of Cr Moore, That tenders be invited for reforming, at a cost not to exceed £10, the road fiotn. the lower end of Eailes hill to the junction road to Waihi. Also that £<IO be expended on same road from tho Junction to the Martha oattery at Waihi. Cr Mooie ref cried to tho fact that nearly all tho Government subsidies promised Council had been wiped out, Council not being in a, position to avail of them, but there was a subsidy of £150 still available for constructing a road' from the mines at Waihi to the Martha battery. He had been speaking to Mr Walker on tho matter, who had offered on behalf of the Union Co., to advance Council LIGO, in order that they might tako advantage of this Government subsidy, on condition that the Union Co. were credited with same from gold duty, io bo derived from this mine. Resolved, That the chairman be bo empowered to an ange with Mr Walker so that [ Council might be enabled to avail of the Government subsidy of Ll5O, to make a road from the Union and Silver-ton mines, to the liamway at Waihi. ! Waterfall Bridge, Owharoa. — Fiom a number of ratepayers and others at Owharoa, requesting that the Waterfall bridge be restoicd. Eeferrod % to tho Engineer with ■pov er to act, if a bridge could be provided at a cost not exceeding LlO. Gold Duty.— From Clerk Thames Borough Council, ackrowledging receipt of letter from Council, re gold duty resulting from treatment of ore from Ohinemuri County, at La Monte furnace, Thames, but which had never been paid to Ohinemuri County. No Road.— From Thos. Quinn, requesting Council to open a means to access to applicants land through the property of Mr C. F. Mitchell. Referred to the Engineer to report , upon. Bad Road*— From a number of ratepayers interested, requesting that the road leading to Mr Moore's property be repaired. Eeferred to tho Engineer to loporb on. Nuisance. — From J. M. Coote, re nuisance near 1m house. Roceived. G-oldfiolds Revenue.—- Some discussion took place re goldfields revenue, and it was resolved on the motion of Cr Dearie, that the Receivers of goldfields re venue at Te Aroha and Thames be written to, requesting them to furnish a statement of all goldfields revenue and fees, which had accrued within Ohinemuri County since it was constituted, Oefc Ist 1886. Proposed Loan of £1300.— From the Treasury Deparmcnt, Wellington, acknowledging Council's application for loan of £1800, and stating Government agreed to grant £1100 ol' same, provisionally with all the neressary conditions being complied with; biit disallowed the item £200 for county offices, as not being work smb. as contemplated to be undertaken by the Act under which the loan was applied for. Local Option.— Mr N.Kenny was appointed Returning Officer with respeofc to the local option poll to be taken shortly.

Rond to Junction.— From — . Charlton re questing that the Paeroa-Hikutaia road to the Junoton be repaired. Resolved on the motion | of Or Dearie, seconded by Cr Stran g e,-That government be written to respecting the unexpended balance of grant for the Komata road ; the Engineer to inspect the road and report thereon. Revenue from Tui. —Eesolved on the motion of Or Denrlo, that application be made to Government for goldfields revenue which had accrued from licensed holdings, etc., at Tui during the past few months. Road to Karangahake.— Besolved on the motion of Cr Quinn, that the road from Mackaytovrn to Karangahake be metalled. Considerable discussion ensued as to the amount Council coulJ, in thoir present financial position, expend on the road lieaolved on the motion of Cr Robson— U hat the amount expended on this work at present do no*; exceed £50: Pacroa-Mackaytown road.— Resolved that the Engineer bo authorised to repair the road from Littlejohn's to Cox's boundary, at a cost not exceeding L2O. Lower Waitoa Road.-Cr Grange requested that some repairs be effected on the road in his district, so that threshing machines could bo taken over it, at a cost of Li or L 5. Agreed to. Deposit on Contracts.— Eesolved on the motion of Cr Robson that the amount to be lodged by intending contractors with their tender shall, in all cases, be five per cent on all tenders over L 5. On the motion of Cr Kobson it was further resolved that a sum, not exceeding Ll Is, be expended on the track leading from Noble's houße to Karanga-bake-Mackaytown main road. Accounts.— The Finance Committee's report recommending that accounts amounting to LB5 Os 9d be passed for payment, was adopted. lniß concluded the business of the monthly meeting, at the close of which a special meeting was held re proposed loan, the same members being present.
