A Dream of Fair Women.

By a majority of 15 votes to 7 the Legislative Council of New South Wales have determined that th© ladies of Sydney shall have the right to election as Mayors and Aldermen, or we should say Mayoresses and Alderwomen, of the city of Sydney. The prospect is somewhat dazzling and confusing at first sight, considering what some of the results ot this little piece of gallantry on the part of the sage fathers of the Council may be. Imagine for a moment what would happen if some highly gifted and fashionable ornament of Sydney society should aspire to the highest municipal honours. The golden rule of place aux dames mu3t, of course, prevent any man from contesting an election with a lady ; therefore, the way is clear to the Mayoral (or " Mayoressal '') chair. The question of uniform will then arise, and some slight modification being required, the female fancy will run riot in flounces and furbelows, tucks, and gathers, and the thousand mysteries understood only by the female mind. Given, then, a Mayoress in full or fancy dress (a Mayoress, mark, not by marriage but in her own right), and fancy reels at the prospect of balls and routs, the afternoon teas, and the " at homes " which must follow in rich profusion. Of course Aldermen will bear in mind that on the various occasions on which now under the rule of a man the Mayoral champagne flows freely, we shall read in the reports that ' tea was served."
