A COOL BANKRUPT.

A debtor was undergoing cross-examina-tion by the Deputy- Assignee at Grey town lately, when the following colloquy took place : — Deputy- Assignee —Do you receive money from Home ? Debtor— l have had some. Deputy-Assignee (brightening up) —Oh ! Have you had any lately ? Debtor —Not very lately. Deputy - Assignee— Well, how long sinee — twelve months? Debtor — More than that. Duputy-As-signee—Well, tell us how long. Debtor - J think it must be twelve years ago. Deputy- Assignee (warmly) — Why didn't you say 80 at first ? Now, arc you expecting any money from Home ? Debtor— Yes, I think so. Deputy -Assignee (brightening up again) - Oh, you are ? When do you hope to receive it? Debtor— l can't say; I haven't any idea. Deputy - Assignee — But if you have money coming to you, you can surely tell us when you expect it. Debtor— l don't think I can. Doputy-As-signe'e—Why not? Debtor— Because the person is not dead yet. The Deputy-As-signee looked the debtor in the face for a full minute, but there was not the shadow of a smile on it, and the subject of " great expectations " dropped.
