PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL:

-♦ THKu^iial monthly mooting of the Piako County Council was held at Iltuuilton on Satuiday. Present: Crs Willi.tinH (chairim.ii), M.iclean, Brunhkill, Murphy, Chepnipll. ami Smith. Correspondence, wag read showing that a strong 1 protest had been made to Government against Thames Harbour Board having any control over the livers within Pi;iko County, and requesting Government to rescind the proclamation granting such control. Mr James Clarke, of Te Aroha, wrote complaining that the late heavy rains had done damage to the drain, which had made fresh outlets for itself, and flooded hia lands, sweeping away trees and shrubs. The letter was received. The Engineer reported that the Matatnata Road Contract had been satisfactorily executed. The destruction of a bridge on the Te Aroha- Gordon Special Settlement Road, by fire, was reported. It was resolved before the Council rebuild the bridge, that further information should be afforded as to the cause of the fire. It was reported by the Council's solicitor, Mr Hay, that so far as the Warden was concerned, the tramway lease* bad been completed, and would date from Nov. Ist. The tramway repprt showed the receipts for tho month had been £113, and the expenditure E92 4s 9d. Four hundred and sixty-nine tracks of quartz and 179 trucks ol firewood had been sent down. It was unanimiously renolved, on the motion of Cr. ChepmelJ, seconded by Cr Smith, that a letter be written to the manager of the tramway, Mr Gavin, acknowledging the excellent manner in which he had managed the tramway nince b,eing appointed Mr J. B. Smith said there had never been a complaint against him. Cr W. J. Firth tendered his resignation as a member of the Council for Matamata Riding.
