OHINEMURI COUNTY COUNCIL. (TO THE EDITOR .)
Sir.-— lv the Hauraki Tribune of 14th met* appears a notice respecting; the last | monthly meeting of our County Council which, although exceedingly brief, the whole information with regard to the meeting being contained in a few lines — contains the following statements :— ~ (1). That " Cr. Cock proposes to dismember the Paeroa Riding) and make a new riding out of it. " (2) "The Netherton Riding is illegal. " (3). "So are the steps taken re the loan." (4). ''The Council pays the Aroha News £11 6s 8d for advertising, the charge for which in the Tiibune is 13s 6d (thirteen shillings and sixpe-jce. " (5) " The £200 granted for the track to Dihais has been obtained, and spent on something olse." Now, Sir, in the Auoha and Ohinicmuiu Nbws of the 16th inst Appears a report of the business transacted at the meeting referred to, occupying about a column and a half of space, and yet none of the information referred to aa above is given ; and on behalf of myself and other subscribers to the News from this district, I wish to ask why it is this information was suppressed in the otherwise apparently full report given in your paper ; or if the omission was accidental, why has it not since been given in your columns ? — I remain, etc, Inquirer. Faeroa, October 24th 1887.
[In reply to your enquiry we hag to state the^infonnution (!) given in the Tribune, as referred to in your letter, did not appear in the Niws because we do not believe any one of the statements couldbe substantiated, for the following reasons. (1 ) As a matter of fact Cr. Cock instead of proposing to dismember Pneroa Riding a8 asserted, opposed any dismemberment thereof. (2). Thert t is no svch Riding as tbe " Netherton, " how then could it be illegal? (3) In our is<ue of 15th inst. Mr Miller' (sblicitor) opinion as to the proposed loan is published in full. (4) Tins statement is apparently a wilful perversion of the tiutb. The exact ainouut of tbe News account for advertising May 7to Augubt 21 , last account f urnisho \, and which includes several advertisements re former proposed £7,000 loan, and also the advertising of yearly and half yearly balance sheet) was £12 2s: What the ex act amount, of the Tribune account for
same peiiod was we do not know, nut if you will take the tiouble to enqun • at the ] County Office you cnn eatilv ■ceitajn, i und.we- believe yon will find that the Tri- ! buno charge foy advertising balance shoe alone amounts to close on ihe tut.il amou-at of Nkwh account referred to. As a matter of fact the News tender for printing county electoral rolls for the several ridings* of Ohmomnri Oourry was £2 9s 6d, (two pound's! nine shillings and sixpence) the reply lereived fnun the Tiibuud office being as follows : "Theuost of the first rolls was h bruit £17 (aeventeen pounds), this roll wiil cost about the suine." (Tlie italics are ours. Aw a matter of tact a far larger number of rolls than specified when tendeiH wen* invited were printed ut the NKWsoilice for a total cost of £3 6s. (s)The Council at date of comity meeting referred to hud not received a cent for tii 3 Parakawai Truck ; how then could u nave been spt« nt on something elae ; nor, solar us we liHve heard, have they icceived any money for this track t-ince. We would urhise 3'ou to accept all wiid statemeuts, such jib yvxx refer to in your letter, with caution. \V» have no wish ■to offer an opinion an to what instigated them, but you should remember at election timea too often reports are set going for the purpone of unduly influencing voters — Ed.
