PROSPECTING FOR TE AKOHA. A PROPOSAL. (To The Editor.)
Sir. — Will you through the medium of your paper, allow me to bring under the notice of the residents of Te Aroha, Wuiorongomai and neighbourhood, a rough scheme to prospect the hills, between th» two townships; with the view of obtaining an expression of opinion as to its feasibility, so that it may be acted upon, amended, or condemned. I would like to state that in wiiting through the Press, my only desiro is for tho good of the whole community. I believe that by making a tunnel from the Te Aroha side of the hill, say from the neighbourhood of Stoney Cieek, towards the New Find mine, at buJi a low level as may be determined upon by praeticul miners, good and payable gold would be obtained, and would well lepay the promoters. I would propose that a sum, say five shillings per week, should be paid by each person wishing to join in the undertaking, and that the Government should be asked to subsidise the amount so ra^ed by £1 for £1, and at the end of one month work should be commenced. A board of directors should bo appointed l>y the feubtfciibeifl, to ace to the proper unm ing out the work, and the expenditure of the mousy. Ground should be applied for through the Ward mi, of hay five chains wide on each Hide of the centre of the tunnel, and .is leader* were stnit.-k, tributes should be let. ami every encounigt'inent i»iveri to thoroughly tuat tlu-gioiuul th/uugh which the tunnel \n onlil nm. I believe by a prop' r canvas many \vt,uld be only too lead} to j>>in to hutlior the nbovf object ; )in<l even people in Auckland and otner places would lendily bubscri^o. I purposely leave out an) Hens re the forming of <t company, ami other details, such us fcize of tunnel, the exact spot to commence work, direction of diive, etc., and if my ciude scheme is thought well nf, a public meeting should be held, to adopt this or iiny bettor one that may be forthcoming, for if we expect any good from our gold field, we must tiy our beat to prospect it. — I am ; etc , Fiiancts Pavitt. Te Aroha, 26th October, 1887.
