TASMANIAN FARMERS AND PROTECTION.

Hobart, Sept 9. — A meeting was held at Brighton this afternoon to consider the advisability of petitioning Parliament to give greater protection to the farming interest, about eighty farmers being present. The following resolution was carried unanimously :— " That in consequence of the great depression existing in the farming interest in Tasmania and the increased taxation proposals of the Government it is the opinion of this meeting that great encouragement should be given the farmers through the Customs and that *Jie following duties be imposed : — Onall cereals, #d. per bushel ; on flour, £2 per ton ;on hay and chaff, 10s. per ton ; on butter, 4d. per lb ; on carcase meat, 2p. 6d. per lOOlbs ; on horses, £5 per head ; on cattle, 30s>. per head ; on sheep, Is. 6d. per head."
