H.M.S. Nel-on, which left harbour on the sth inst. for Jei^is Bay to engage in torpedo di ill and gun practice, retiucd to port on the 16th inst. and took up her mooring in Farm Cove. On the afternoon of the 10th inst. . a melancholy accident took place, Major Robillaid of the [Marine Aitilleiy being di owned through the upsetting of a boat which he, with the commander and two lieutenants, "un~ mailing ashore in. The Major, with the other occupants of the boat, managed to regain the ciaft after it capsized, but unfortunately it rolled over se\ eral times in .succession, and being an indifferent .swimmer he (the Major v. as drow ned. The others in the boat had a narroA\ escape from meeting with a similar fate. They were picked up in an exhausted condition, but under the skilful treatment of the doctor of the ship lapidly recovered. On the following morning after the boating accident another fatality occurred. It appears that the picket boat with fovu men and an officer was being lowered when without any warning the forward sling carried away, precipitating the occupants into the water. The officer and three of men fell clear, but the other man Charleps Measures, a native of Cambridgeshire, aged 19 years, was struck by the boat and received a frightful fractui eof the skull. Death was instantaneous.
