Abandonment of the Glaslyn
Papers which h«T\e been leceived by the Customs Department, at Melbourne, from the Governor of the Celebes (-Iroup regarding the lo*s of the barque (Jlaslyn in the Malay Archipelago in February last, give a serious aspect to the occunence, inasmuch as they imply that the vessel was set on fire before being abandoned. The statement made b) Captain Rive was that the -sc^el struck on a ieef and became a total wieck, and the insurance companies paid the claims to the om nei *-w ithout demur. The cook of the vessel, who is now in Melbourne, alleges that then.- would have been no difficulty in getting the vessel off the ieef, as she was not seiiously injured, but the captain ordered the crew to leave, after Inning regaled them with >piiiK Shortly afterwards it was obsened that the ship was on fire. Messrs S. Pc Beer and Co., the owners ot the ve^el, decline to belie\e the statement, as the captain had nothing to gain by <-uch conduct, and moreover had to undertake a long perilous voyage vi an open boat with his wife. The insurance companies h.ive now a>-ked the Steam ?"\a"sigation Board to hold an official enquiry.
