POLICE COURT, TE AROHA. WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 17, 1887. (Before Messrs. J. A. Dobson and J. Ilott, J.s P.)
Wm. Smith, labourer, single, was charged by Sergeant Emerson with larceny. The charge was laid on the information of Thos. Taylor, settler at Waitoa, who accused prisoner of stealing a pair of trowsers, value 113, and a pair of spectacles, value 33, from his house on July 2dth. The charge with respect to the spectacles was withdrawn by prosecutor ; and accused pleaded guilty to stealing the trousers. From the evidence it was shown that accused had overtaken Taylor on the road, and assisted him in getting home a heavy load, his horse being weak ; in return for which Taylor asked him into his houaf, and treated him well. lie did not nii>s tlie trousers for a week or so, and then remembered he saw Smith roll up a pair of trousers, and put (hem in Ins snag the day he was afc his house, never dreaming they wore lii 3 own. A seai eh warrant was issued, and the missing trousers found hanging up outeide Smith's whare. Convicted, and sentenced to 14 days imprisonment in Mount E len gaol, with hard labour.
