Disaster on Lake Michigan.

The steamer Champlain was burned off Charlevoix, Michigan. The boat, was running ten miles an hour when flames suddenly shot up beneath the engine, driving the engineer from his post with his cloth cm on fire. The alarm was given, and the sleeping passengers aroused, and in ten minutes from the time the fire caught the passengers were all compelled to jump into the lake. There were 57 persons on board, including the crew. Of this number 20 arc known to be drowned and seven unaccounted for. Those saved floated foi oiie hour and a-half, when they were rescued by a yawl and fish boats from shore. Severn 1 of the saved wore badly burned. SoM.n bodies have already been recovered. The Champlain was valued at about 10,000dol.
