MORE BELFAST RIOTS. POLICE CHARGE THE MOB
Serious rioting took place yesterday at Belfast, on the occasion of the Orange demonstration in celebration of the Battle of the Boyne. A large force of police were called out, aud charged the mob. Order was then restored.
Quite a scare took place all over English sporting circles on the morning of May 17, when the telegraph conveyed the news that Enterprise had met with an accident while at exercise, some reports going so far as to say that the Derby favourite had broken down. That this was believed to be the case was to some extent confirmed by the market operations ab the London clubs, as much as 6 to 1 being offered against tho Two Thousand Guineas winner for the Derby. As the- day Avore on, however, the news from Newmarket pi-oved of a more hopeful character for the son of Sterling, and at the close of business offers were plentiful to take 4to 1. That the followers of Enterprise have no great occasion for alarm, said the "Sportsman," may be gleaned from the following telegram received from our Newmarket correspondent, which states the full facts of the case :—: — " When starting this morning to gallop with Bird of Freedom on the Limekilns, Enterprise, who was very fresh, was frightened by something, and swerved to the left across the Norwich road into a. field on the other side. He was immediately brought back by Warne, and completed the mile and a half with Bird of Freedom. On landing across the road, however, he slightly wrenched himself, but I have authority for saying that James Ryan has overy confidence that the injury to the Derby candidate is of a trivial nature only,"
