TE AROHA SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The usual monthly meeting of To Aroiia School Committee was held on Tuesday evening Jast. Present : Hey. J. Marshall (chairman), J. Uotfc (sec), J. Conies, J. Farrell, and J. Mills. The usual returns and monthly report from the head teacher were read. Number on the roll for month of May, 13G ; average attendance, 9G.5. The following, amongst other matters, were referred to in above report : 1. That owing to lack of proper drainage the gravel at the back of the school had been washed away by flood water from the upper part of the block. On the motion of Mr Farrell, seconded by Mr Ilott, it was resolved that the Secretary be requested to write to tho chairman of the Town Board bringing the matter under his notice, and asking that a water table bo cut along the eastern side of the school grounds, so as to divert fl )od water from injuring the school giounds. 2. That the library, though it con-
tains many books that are interesting, instructive, and such as supplement Work done in the school is almost entirely neglected. The subscription charged was twopence per month, and it appeared that it was on account of this charge many did not avail of the books, and the head teacher suggested that the library be uiade free to all children from Standard Three upwards. Mr Farrell spoke m favour of adopting the suggestion of the head teacher, that the library be made free. Messrs Oornes and Ilott expressed themselves as strongly opposed to 60 doing ; an excellent library had been got together at considerable trouble and expense, the charge levied only amounted to a half- penny a week, a contribution within the reach of every child attending the school, nnd whilst regretting the fulling off in the number of those availiug themselves of the library, they could see no good object to be gained by throwing the library open, as suggested, and the result would probably be much injury to the books. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Comes, seconded by Mr Ilott, That no alteration in the existing arrangements as regards the school library be made at present. 3. Three days during the present month having been gazetted as holidays in the departments of the public service, the head teacher wished to know whether the school would be closed on those days. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Mills, seconded by Mr Cornea, That Jubilee Day only be a general school holiday. 4. The head teacher sent in a list of books it was proposed to add to the school library. Resolved, on the motion of Mr Ilott, seconded by Mr Comes, That the list be referred back to Mr Marsden for the purpose of having the author's name added with respect to the books referred to. The Chairman stated he had been requested to bring before the Committee the matter of the celebration of the Queen's Jubilee at To Aroha, and to ask it they were willing that the chiliren, as a school, on that day join in the celebrabions, etc. Mr Comes, one of the committee for carrying out the arrangements for the Jubilee Day, stated that it was desired that a general procession of the residents, and school children should march from the school-house in the afternoon for the Domain, where tree planting, etc, would take place, and "he would much like that the proposed arrangement should be carried out. The other members being likewise in favour of the proposal, it was resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr Ilott, That this Committee agree to join most heartily in giving effect to tho suggestion of the Celebration Committee. A. reply was read from the Board of Education to the effect they could not accede to the requeet of the Committee to supply register grates for the sfehooi* house and teacher's residence. On the motion of Mr Ilott, seconded by Mr Comes, the Chairman and Mr Farrell were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month with power to act respecting several matters requiring the attention of the Committee. The Secretary was requested to accede to the request of the head teacher that he be supplied with a copy of Inspector Fidler's report for the past year.
