Paeroa, Last Night. Adeline. — There is a very good show of amalgam on the plates of Railcy's plant. Over 5 tons of quartz aio m>w under treatment, and the crushed ore will !>e subjected to the grinding process tomorrow. Diamond. — In tho loading stopo which is now carried along tho back of the level going north of the winze, the lode is about 12 inches thick, and a fair proportion of stone shows gold freely. From here there is now to hand about 7 tons of quartz, and this will be considerably augmented during the month, by end of which time crushi ng operations will very probably be started.
LATEST FROM THAMES. Thames, Last Night. | Sliaremarket : Prince Imperials : Sellers 6s 6d ; Cambria, buyers, 6s ; Saxon, sellers, Is. A large native meeting is to bo held at Kopu in March. About 300 natives are | expected from Tara^vera, and 100 from the north. At the Police Court to-day, Richard Richards, son of the licensee of the Governor Bowen Hotel, was fined £3 or one month's imprisonment for assaulting the Police while arresting his mother, and Henry Mounce £2 or 24 days for inciting Richards to resist the Police. Two informations have been laid against Mrd Richards for using obscene language.
LATEST FROM AUCKLAND, Auckland, Last Night. Jesse Cockboatl was committed for tiial on charge of stealing a horse, value £7, the property of Percy E. Stevens, of Hamilton, Mrs Brigham, sen., mother of the Secretary of the Harbour Board, and a very old settler, died to day. Professor Lombert thinks it probable that the comet seen in the south-west heavens is the nno which was discovered on September 26th last year by Mr Finlay, first assistant at the Cape of Good Hope Observatory. Tho perihelion of the comet took place on November 21st, 1886. This comet should be visible in the evening about the present time. The other comet which this may prove to be is comet Barnard, which was discovered by a Mr Barnard on October 4th, 1886. It passed its perihalion on Dec. 24th, at the time of its appearance it 3 motion was northwards, therefore the present visitor is most probably the Finlay comet, unless of course it should prove an entire stranger. Licensed Victuallers Association, have voted £650 to fight approaching elections.
