WAR IN AFGHANISTAN. Expected Russian Invasion.
Calcutta, January 16. News from Afghanistan reports that the Ghilzais tribes have again been defeated by a regiment of the Ameer's troops near Ghuznee, and that there are signs of preparations being made for a fresh rising in spring. London, January 7. Great excitement has been caaeed by the intelligence that a Cracow newspaper has published a letter from a correspondent at Merv, in which the writer asserts that the Russian Government are vigorously making preparations to invade Afghanistan in the coming spring. Their plan xs to proceed toward the Persian Gulf via Herat. Large numbers of troopa have lately been transported to Merv by rail, and the total number now massed at that point is about 100,000. Further troops are expected to arrive shortly. The Afghan Government having received intelligence of the movement of Russia, is actively engaged rjreparing to meet the attack, and orders fiave been issued for the purchase of 40,000 horses to be used in opposing Russian cavalry.
The tradesman who does nojs advertise liberally haa been very appropriately compared to a mant who haß a lantern, but ii too stingy to buy a candle.
