Government Land Purchases. 170,000 Acres Acquired at Taupo. Hamilton, Jan. 19.

Mr W, H. Gkace, who is engaged on behalf of the Government in the purchase of native lands, has acquired in the space of twelve months over 170,000 acres of land in the Taupo country, about onethird of which is said to be suit* able for email settlement purposes, tha balance being good grazing land, partrj of which t»re covered with good totara and other timber. This should bo considered smart work, when it ia understood that when he began work this time last year none of the country had been passed through the Court. be had first to pass it through which took nearly four months, before he could begin to purchase! A great deal of his time was also occupied in assisting in putting through the Court large areas of the Taupo Nui a tia block, the titles to which, as far as the hapus were concerned, were ascertained, and he now proceeds to Taupo to get the list ot names passed, when a large block called Taupo Nui a tia West, containing about half-a-million acres, will be in such a porition that the purchase of it can be gone on with immediately. In fact, before another month has passed, Mr Grace hopes that he will have acquired a considerable portion of this large block. During the last two months he has been busily engaged in assisting in the purchase, of the Waimarino Block, and has vißited in connection with this business many settlements on this and the other side of Taupo as far as Karioi, with very satisfactory results. Messrs Mitchell and Cussen have completed the survey of the Taupo Nui a tia West in the Bhort space of six months, and they deaerre great credit for pushing on the work so perseveringly during the bad winter months. Messrs L. M. Grace, M.H.R., and J. E. Grace have greatly assisted the land purchase work in the Taupo district, and have on every occasion used their influence on behalf of the Crown, rendering valuable asoistance at the sitting of the Native Land Court
