RIOTING AT AMSTERDAM.
Serious conflicts took place at Amsterdam on July 26th between the populace and police and troops, arising from the prohibition of a popular game on Sunday. The disorders were continued at night, when the troops fired into the crowd. The rioters erected barriers. The socialists are fomenting dieorder. The prohibited game is the killing of eels attached to a cord over a canal, a degrading pastime popular among the lower classes. Eighteen policemen were wounded. Twentyeight persons have been arrested, including two socialists. i Further attempts at rioting were made next night, but the police succeeded in dispersing the mob before any serious disturbance had taken place. The total casualties resulting from the outbreak are twenty-five killed and ninety wounded. Fifty persons have been arrested, including Mrs Eshery, President of the Women *3 Socialist Society. Only one policeman was mortally wounded. A public fund has been opened for the benefit of the injured officers. The newspapers here applaud the police for their bravery and prompt action, and severely condemn the rioters.
