AN ALPINE ADVENTURE. The Narrow Escape of a Traveller and Two Guides.
A narrow escape from death is reported of M. Burckhardt, a Swies gentleman, and two guides, Teutschmann and Joesi, in the attempt to climb the Jungfrau, When high up, an enormous piece of the glacier came thundering down upon them. Though not in the direct path, they were struck by several pieces of flying ice. Jossi, who was leading, went headfirst into a crevasse of unfathomable depth, dragging after him Burckhardt, who, however, contrived to hold on to the edge of the crevasse in such a position that he could not budge, and was not able to help either himselt or Joesi. Their lives depended for an hour or more on Teutschmann, who kept his feet and held on to the rope until aid reached them. A single slip of his foot and all would have gone to the bottom of the crevasse.
