THE Aroha AND Ohinemuri News AND UPPER THAMES ADVOCATE.

' This above all —to thine own self bo true, And it must follow as the night the day,* Thou canst not then be false to any man.' • —Shaßb&pkabe.

SATURDAY, MAY 29, 1886. AVo feel much pleasure in informing our readers that the Minister of Mines has granted the roquest of the Piako County I Council by sanctioning the expenditure of the balance of the Government subsidy of £300 for sledge tracks at Waiorongotnai. The council meet to-day, and will, we feel confident, tike immediate steps to have the much-needed sledge track to the Stoney Creek claims, and the truck to connect the tramway with Tni proceeded with. The approval of these works will however, first have to be obtained from the Warden. Mr Montgomery, of the 1 names School of Mines, closed his classes at Waiorongomai on Wednesday night, and is now busily engaged in preparing for his classes at Te Aroha, which will be held in Cocks' auction mart, Rolloston street, commencing on Monday evening next. We hope large numbers will avail of this opportunity of obtaining much valuable knowledge. Mr F. Pavitt Surveyor, has been employed during the past two weeks in laying off a township at Alyesbury, the estate of F. Strange, Esq., of Waitoa. Mr Strange has also disposed of a farm of 150 acies to Mr Scott and is piepared to lay off and sell at reasonable prices, farms fiom 50 acres upwards. The township lots which arc one acre each are apparently in lequebt as several have already been applied for. This township should shouly become a thiiviug settlement,~as the presence of hot springs on the estate will in time, cause Alyesbury to become a very pleasant and attractive sanatorium. To those who prefer a quiet count r y life for a seabon, Mr Str.mge's placo -affords many attiactions in addition to the hot baths, there is good shooting and boating on the Waitoa liver, the comforts of a home are also to be found at the farm, and it will afford all Mr Slrmge's friends great pleasure to lec-ommend the attractions of the place to thooo in search of health and rest. Messrs Bixulio and Smith, _ two of the Governors of the Thames Uigh School, accompanied by Mr R. A. Hjtild, the I secret uy, paid a vi^it to Waiorongomai o i Wednesday, and inspected the Hi^h School Endowment. They expressed themselves pleased with the amount of cultivation and grass land on the town section which with four exception arc being steadily improved. They also visited the township, and inspected Bevcial luuMings that the owner* hid made application to lemovc. Mr Peter Ferguson and Mr Sm.udon waited on them at Lawless' Uote], at 3 o'clock. Mr Feiguson stated that he hal b«en appointed at a public meeting to point out to the Governors of the Thames fiighScliool that one fouith o£ the revenue derived from the to a nship .should be spent for the improvement of the town. Ho also pointed out works urgently requiring repairrf to loads, watci tables, and culverts, and pio\ isions for a domestic water supply." Mr Brodic, on bohalf of the Governors informed .Mr Ferginoa that they waro unaware of any law providing for thus e-'xpeuding of one fourth of the revenue; 13ut were prepared t ) hear any request or proposition from the inhabitants of W.iiorongomai which would bo submitted for tho ' consideration of the Governors. Mr Ferguson had made several requests that they were unprepared at present to replj to, but if these were put im writing and foiwaided to him they would be duly considered by the Governors at their next meeting. Tha deputation thanked the Governors and withdrew. The Governors were accompanied by the Mining Inspector who pointed out those portions of the Endowment fiom which Goidfield E^venue was derived, and also sites which l!io Warden had recommend to be granted as residence sites in the township. The meeting vox therefore adjourned to this evening, the 29th inst. Kegret was felt and expressed that soma of the Shaftesbury settlers had to travel so far, seeing that no business could be transacted. We learn that Mr A.
