KARANGAHAKE.
Woodstock. — Work in this mine is now entirely suspended, and thero is no chance of a resumption until smelting operations are fairly underway. Last week it was rumoured that the furnace 'would be started this week, ami now we are told that arrangements are in progress for making a star 1 ; next week. The cause of all this delay is, I believe, owing to some misunderstanding between Mr E. K. Davis creditors and Mr La Monte. The first mentioned party is doing his very best to bring about an amicable settlement of the difficulty, and the whole question — which is one of many — will be settled one way or another in a few days' time. Ivanhoe. — The crosscut from the No. 2 level has now been driven close up to the point where the reef should be encountered, and it would be no surprise to the manager to meet with it at any moment. On the surface, trenching operations are now in progress, with a view to testing a large reef which outcrops in various places throng-bout the whole length of the company's ground, and from which stone carrying prospects of gold have already been obtained. Crushing one shift with twelve head of stampers is still proceeding, and the show of amalgam on the plates is equivalent to a payable return. Kenilworth. — Some very good stone is being obtained from the stopes that are now in operation on the reef abuve the intermediate level, and the first parcel of crushing d:rt will be sent to the battery next week, by which time the manager will have about 25 tens ready for treatment. Scott. — A six-ton parcel of "quartz is now under treatment at the Ivanhoe battery from Me Williams and party's tribute section in this mine, and- it is shaping for a payable return. Tregoweth. ] and party, tributers, will very soon have the work of constructing their tramway complete, and forwarding crushing dirt to the Ivanhoe battery will be next in the order of things. Welcome. — In the low level, which is now in a distance of 37 feet, the reef is at present somewhat broken but a
change for the belter Was apparent in the face yesterday ; and the manager, expects to ireet with better defined walls in a few feet more driving. Sutro — The country in the low level is still of so very hard a nature as to necessitate the constant use of explosives, aha progress is somewha.t slow in consequence. This hard bar is not of great thickness, and the manager hopes to be able to break through it into' a better class of country very shortly. Adeline. — Stoping both ways from the winze has been in progress for some time past,- and stone of first-class quality is being grassed from both points. There are now about 45 tons of quartz in the paddock, and this will be senfc to the Ivanhoe battery for reduction as soon as the road — which is now in a very- delapidated condition — will have been made passable for traffic.
