OWHAROA.

Farmer arid pai ty are now drivitig a hew level, with a view to intersecting the No. 4 leader in the Smile of Fortune ground. This leader lias yielded handsome returns wberever it has been worked upon, and as the tributers are about to try it in a new place it is quite possible that a new and important discovery may be made. For sheer pluck and perseverance commend me to Jim Stevenson and his mate Jerry Rouse. These 1 two men are the owners of a peiee of ground kndwri as the Evelyn claim, situate ou the nortHern side of the Owharoa township, arid Upon which they have obtained undoubted evidences of the existance of rich gold bearing reefs. Since starting operations, some twelve months ago, they have done a considerable amount of surface prospecting, consistidg of shallow levels and trenching, but finding that thero was a large amount of surface debris to contend with, they concluded to diive a low level tunnel which is now in a' distance of 500 feet/ and they expect to have to drive a consideiable distance further before meeting with anything of importance. A few weeks ago they made application lo Government for assistance towards carrying out their tun-nel scheme, and the applica- 1

tion was referred back to the Mining Inspector who, for Borne reason or otftpr, reported unfavourably, and consequently Government declined to Bub«idise the work. Nothing dn 11 n ted, however, these plucky individual.-, ure still carrying on in the full belief thai; in the end"they will ha aiAply rewaided for their faith and perseverance.
