KARANGAHAKE.
During the past week the Australian expertj Mr Rile}', has been engaged in experimenting with the Mucky pan on qnartz from the Sutro mine, and, if all I hear be true, his experiments have been attended with very satisfactory results. Mr Kiley states that by this method he will save 90 per cent of all met.il in the moBt refractory ore at less than half the" estimated cost of treatment by the smelting processes. The manager b'f the Adeline mine is now crushing a pai'del of about 13 totts of second class quarts at the Ivan hoe battery, and it is shaping for a re'tiirn of fully 3ozs per tori. This stuff is the residue of a 5-ton parcel which lias been sent to the Thames smelting works fdr treatment, and consequently it is only reasonable to suppose that the latter will realise a good price. From the other mines there is notriirig new to report.
