Melbourne, March 19. — A special Cabinet Council was held yesterday to consider the question of local defences. Sir William Jervois and Major-General Scratchley were present to confer with the Ministers. The result of the meeting is kept secret. Melbourne, March 23,— The match between Shaw's English Eleven and a team representing Combined Australia commenced on the Melbourne Club's ground on Saturday, in the presence of a large number of spectators. The Australian team were all disposed of for a total of 164 runs, and the Englishmen then went to the wickets. Scotton and Barnes, the first representatives, made a good stand, and when time was called the jcore stood at 44 without the loss of a wicket, Scotton being 21 and Barnes 19, not out. Melbourne, March 24. — The match England v. Australia was resumed yesterday morning. The Englishmen continued at the wickets the whole day, the (score standing at 270, with five wickets down when the stumps were drawn, Melbouknb, March 25.— Thecricketmatch, England v. Australia, was resumed yesterday. The Englishmen concluded their first innings, which closed for 386. The Australians, who were 222 behind their opponents, commenced their second innings, and at the conclusion of the day's play had scored 100 runs with the loss of seven wickets. Sydney, March 20.— 1n the Legislative Council jesterday afternoon, the Address-in-Replv to the Governor's Speech was adopted without opposition. Sir Honry Parkes announces his intention of offering himself as a candidate for the first vacant seat in the Legislative Assembly. Sydney, March 20.— His Excellency Sir VVm. Jervois was a passenger by the Manapouri, which left here yesterday, for Auckland. Sydney, March 20. — New Zealand wheat is quoted at 2s sd, a decline 4d since last week's report ; New Zealand oats are steady at 2d 3d ; maize has declined sd, to 3s 6d ; the Sugar Co. 'a No. 1 pieces are unchanged at £26 per ton. } {Sydney, March 25.— -The debate on the question of indemnifying Government for their action in despatching a military contingent to the assistance of England in the Soudan, was continued in the Legislative Assembly last night. A division was taken early this morning, with the result that Mr Henry Clarkes amendment condemning Government was rejected by 164 to 23, and the Address-in-Reply to the Governor's speech was adopted by the House. Adelaide, March 20. — Wheat is quoted at 3s 6d, and the market is depressed ; town flour £8 per ton, and country brands £7 ss. Freights to London ;— Steamers, 26s to 30s ; ditto sailing, 30s. Adelaide, March 20.— Mauritius advices to the 6th instant are to hand per Messageries steamer Sydney. Under that date Messrs Ireland, If racer and Co. 'a circular reports that crop accounts are more favourable. The month's engagements include 300 tons for Wellington; and clearances, 900 tons for Port Chalmers. Freights to Australia are 20s to 235 ; New Zealand, 33s to 345.
