FATAL BOATING ACCIDENT. Christchurch, January 21.

A fatal accident occurred in Lyttelton Harbour yesterday. Mark Thomas, mail carrier to Purau, left Lyttolton Wharf with the mail and three passengers in an open boat at 11 o'clock, There was a stiff N.E. gale blowing, and shortly after clearing the breakwater a heavy sea came aboard the boat. Thomas jibed the boat to recover the hat of one of the men, which liad blown overboard, when a sea broke heavily over the stern of the boat, which sank at once. Joseph King, one of the passengers, being unable to swim, was drowned. The other throe men supported themselves on the mast of the boat till rescued.
