Prince Bismarck on South Sea Annexation.
That the action of the Government of New Zealand in proposing to annex the Sanioan I Islands to this colony is not altogether I void of political significance, as some | critics have tried to make out, is evident from the fact that it has been made the subject of remark by the German Chancellor. From his reported utterances, it seem that the Government of the Kaiser had not been moving so expeditiously in the matter of annexation in the Pacific as Prince Bismarck desires, for he instances the proposed annexation by New Zealand to show how German interests may suffer by delay. The • ' blood and iron " prince is reported to have declined giving any information as to the future intentions of Germany in the matter of annexation, lest his schemes should be thwarted by the active Anglo-Saxon colonists. He is also stated to have apprehensions of English opposition to the German protectorate proclaimed over part of New Guinea, in the shape of inciting the natives to resist the German occupation. We incline to think the Chancellor's fears on the latter score are groundless, as Britain would adopt a more straightforward if less pleasant course if she intendtd objecting to the presence of our Teutonic cousins in New Guinea.
