Intentions of the New Zealand Government. Wellington, January 12.
With the official explanation of the Hineraoa mystery the other day, most people will imagine that we have heard the last of the annexation of Samoa for the present ; but there seems to be a doubt about' that, and the statement that the Government have plant: for such annexation, despite Lord Derby's refusal to sanction the proposal, and the continued detention of the Hinemoa in Auckland, seems to favour the idea that the Government are still considering the subject. I have endeavoured to ascertain from the Ministry what the truth is in respect to this surmise, but the peculiarly mysterious manner with which all mention of the subject is received by Ministers, and their continued disregard for the principles of truth, make it difficult to extract any information of a reliable nature. I am pretty confident in stating, however, that correspondence on the subject is still going on between Lord Derby, His Excellency the Governor, and the Premier and Colonial Treasurer.
