THE ELECTRIC LIGHT. Proposal to Use it on the Queen-street Wharf.

Provosals have repeatedly boon mado for illuminating the Qucen-fctreot Wharf at night, with the electric light, but so far no definite action has been taken in the matter. One of the Harbour Board Committees has now under its consideration the following offer from Mr .1. Nearing, stevedore, on the subject. The writor says:— " Herewith I beg to submit specifications and price for furnishing your wharves with electric light, and respectfully solicit your consideration. In working large steamers at night it would be a great advantage for giving despatch, and would greatly assist thoso om ployed in di&charging cargo. Should you be disposed to entertain this, I am prepared, a.s agont to Messrs Muir and jVlavor, to indent for you direct, and placo you upon best terms as to height, vfcc, and iuvni&h you with full particulars as to working. I may mention that one ot the small wharf donkey-engines could drive a six-light machine. " The following is the estimate of co & t appended to the letter :—: — Estimate for electric lighting plant of Auckland Harbour: One G unit dynamo electric machine, direct wound, constructed for arc lighting, with all the latest improvements, to run G arc lamps of 2,000 candlepower, £12G ; spare amatu re forsamo, £21 ; G double differential automatic regulator electric arc lamps for outdoor use, £72 9s ; 6 globes, £G Cs ; 500 yards No. IS copper wire-double insulation, t26 ss; 500 yards No. 20 19 strand copper wire-cable insulation, £20 5s ; one switch, ll.s ; current indicator, £4]5&: Total, £283 11s. Packing the wholo lor shipment, £15 15s. Total, £299 Gs. Six horse-power nominal steam engine to i un (5 arc lights, t'GO 18s; packing for shipment, i 3 Is. Total, L'tiS 19s. Eight horse-power nominal steam engine, to run 12 arc lights, L'S-1 ; packing for shipment, £4 4s. Total, £SS 4s. The Committee "ft ill bring up a report on the pioposal at the next meeting of the Harbour Boaul.
