SCARE ON THE PENGUIN.

(From the Auckland " Star," July 12.) Great excitement was caused on the wharf this afternoon by a sensational occurrence on the Penguin. A message was sent to the Police Station to the effect that the crew were all armed with knives, and in a state of mutiny. Sergeant Gamble and Constables Berne and Carroll were despatched to quell the rebellion. They found that a quarrel had taken place between some of the men and an engineer, and the lawful orders of the officers had been set atdefiance, One of the belligerants named George Darrell was taken into custody, while another offender managed to make his escape when the blue-coated custodians of the peace hove in .sight. Peace was restored by the sergeant, and Darrell will be brought up at the Police Court to-morrow charged with disobedience of lawful commands, and being absent from the vessel without leave.

In sentencing Mrs Lynch at Wellington on Thursday to 18 months' imprisonment for breach of the Marriage Act, His Honor said: "Alice Lynch, I have considered your case with a view to seeing if I ought to make any differencebotween yourpunishment and that of the man who has been your asHociato in this oiFonce. I think there is some ground for making a difference in your favour, though I do not think it ought to be a very great one. I think there is some ground to suppose that you acted under the influence, and one may say to a certain extent under tlae coercion, of the man. Be appears to have threatened to turn you and your sister out into the street. It is certainly quite a matter of opinion whether you were or not, at least, as bad as he in the matter. You owed a duty to the child which he did not, and you grossly betrayed that trust," '
