TE AROHA TRAMWAY.

At the ordinary monthly meeting of the Piako County Council, held on Wednesday, tire 25th ult., the Chairman of the Tramway 'Committee submitted the following monthly report from the manager :—: — Dear Sir, — 1 have the honour to report as follows for the information of tiie chairman : It will be in the recollection of the chairman that 1 mentioned in my hst report that a little more work required to be done to complete the extension of the line 100 yards to connect with the Eiln'ka Company's Wire tramway j'ist erected. Thfe extension has dnring the month been completed by the ordinary handa employed on the tramway when they wCie riot otherwise engaged in working the line. During the month I have had some of the men on at odd times forming a roadway from the foot of the tramway down on to the flat part of the country. This is completed now and enables goods to be sleighed or packed right up on to the tramway line, and not left some 50 yards off to be carried up by men at a very great labour. Damage : I have to report that on Monday, the 9th, a loaded truck which had just left the top of the May Queen self-acting grade broke away from the shackling and went down with a run, and coming into contact with the empty waggon which stood at the lower end of the grade threw both of them off the line. The line itself was not damaged in any way, but the trucks were so injured that it will cost, I estimate, £6 to repair them. Ido not attach any blame to any of the men for the accident, believing that it occurred entirely through taultiness in the iron. Heavy rains and storms on the 17th, 18th, and 19th of the month caused a considerable amount of damage on the line. A large slip took place on the morning of the 18th, about \ a chain on the south side of the tunnel, and stopped the traffic for two days. It has cost, I estimate, from £25 to £30 to remove the obstruction. This cost is included in the amount of £150 for the month's pay sheet. Had it not been for this stoppage and the very rough weather we have experienced the last few days, the return for the last week of the month would nave been better than usual. As it is, it is up to the average. The week's return of quartz delivered at the battery to date is enclosed — I have [the honour to be, Sir, yours obediently, H. it. AdaMs, Tramway Manager. Cr Firth Said that owing to the roughness of the weather, considerable delays and interruptions had taken place, and, generally speaking} tiie month had been an unfortunate ono. The various mines were in a, position to send down a much larger quantity of quartz "than the battery could possibly deal wivh. !he revenue that month was about £150 from the tramway alone. \ The wages bill was £120, and^, £30 had been spont in repairing damages. Next month they hoped to have the interest paid at any rate. The gold revenue was about £60 for the month. He moved that the report be adopted. — Motion adopted. — Waikato Times.
