OHINEMURI GOLDFIELDS. (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Karangahake. The loiig expected start oi the Hauraki G.M. Oo.'s. battery' has not yet taken place, as it w;is found that the wire tramway constructed for bringing the quartz to the battery would not work. The weight and sag cf the break Jine was so much that it caUbed the truck when emptied into the hopper to run back about 100 ft oil the main line. Mr E. M. Corbett, the engineer-in charge, i.s now correcting the defect by stretching telegraph wires underneath and at right angles to the tram in order to support the weight of the wire, and expects to have every tiling to rights early next week, In the meantime the Hauraki Los. mine is full of quartz ready for conveyance to the battery. Most of the other mines on the Karangahake Spur are at work prospecting and opening up their ground, and are anxiously awaiting the result of the first crushing from the '* Haur.iki." The mines on the western side of the Ktirangahake Trig station are almost in the same position with regard to the battery as the mines at Waioiongomai were to the Te Aroha battery. As 'the mines up the Waiorongomai creek are better than anything found on the surface of the hills, so we should not be* surprised if the mines on the western side of the Karangahake trig were found better' than those now about to be tried. We hope that even should the crushing now be unsatisfactory, capital will not be deterred from prospecting the mines on the western slopes. On : the other hand, shareholders in these mines ought to be prepared to offer reasonable inducements to capital without the liberal expenditure of which they must lie dormant. OwHAROA.—The Smile of Fortune still keeps hammering away, most of the quartz being from the Company mine, j The manager intends to clean up this week, wlien a good return is expected. WaitekaUßl.— Holies and party, tribute rs, have opened out from the bottom of their winze, and are getting good crushiug stuff, w4tU every ; probabjlity of a good bock iti .front of them. Huntley and Skene, have, started a '.level 1 in -the old " Jusi-in-Tinoe " grpunS, which will give 1 them about 50ft of backs on the leader which shaped 'so well 1 lately. - Waihi.— The only mino at, work in this district is tbat.dr Martka Extended Gold'mlning Company, where work is being carried on in an extensive and systematic
style under our old friend, John Moore. Twenty head of stampers are kept steadily and constantly working; the reef is large, and easily worked and easily crushed, and though not rich the cost of crushing and winning being so small ia good enough to^'pay expenses and leave a good margin for profit. It is the intention of the directors to add mother ten head of stampers to the battery immediately.
