A BOGUS “CHIEF.”
A rather extraordinary story was told to a Manawatu Times reporter by a visitor from the country to the Feilding races on Wednesday. The visitor was ‘ ‘ touched ’ ’ for 5/ by a woman in the earlier part of the day, and seeing that her investment was successful, he. followed her tips for other races with gratifying results. Unfortunately the woman became intoxicated with success and by other means before’the day was over, and the visitor paid a debt of gratitude by seeing her landed safely at the railway station. Shortly after he was accosted by a man on the platform who, stating he was a detective and that the visitor was under observation for consorting with disreputable characters, outlined his movements for the day. Another man who addressed the aceoster as “Chief’' stepped up and w*as given instructions by "Chief” to proceed to Taihape on duty. "Chief” then informed the visitor that for the consideration of £1 sterling, golden silence could be procured. This aroused the visitor’s ire and suspicion, and after roundly rebuking "Chief,” he •went in search of a real policeman, unfortunately without result. "Chief,” in passing, also gave the visitor the gratuitous information that a free ride on the train to Palmerston North could beby slinping round to the other si V of the line and boarding a earring" *her'N The local police have been infov™ :■] of the occurrence.
