WAR MEMORIALS. WELLINGTON, Oct. «9. The Couuties Bill was Jinu-ly passed by the Legislative Council to-'day. 4 new clause was added, giving councils power to contribute towards the cost of approved war memorials erected by any other county or local body or by public subscription, whether it b 3 exectc.l within or without the boundaries of the council.
PATE A DAM BURSTS. WHARE SWEPT TO SEA. WANGrANUI, Oct. 30. Patea Borough Council's dam at the hydro-electric works burst a coufle of nights ago during torrential rain, and two young fellows had a thrilling and narrow escape from death. While they were having tea their whare commenced to rock, and then it slipped over the edge "of a cliff into the sea. Mitchell tried to escape- through a window, bjit failed, and was carried over with the building. A big set was running at the time, and the whare was -carried back on the crest of a large roller. His companion (McDonald), who had escaped, rushed down the' beach to Mitchell's assistance. . He found his room-mate in an unconscious condition, but gradually revived him, and together they had to wait in a sandy inlet for a couple of hours, the waves dashingxover them, and fearing every moment that they would be washed 'out to sea. Eventually they were rescued, but both lads were terribly knocked about. A man named Bason, who rescued them, had to wade in the water up to his chin to reach them.
