SHORTAGE OF COMMODITIES.
BUTTEE. AND SJGAE HAKD TO GET.
For some time past, there has been a shortage of sugar locally, and theore does not appear to be any prospect of immediate relief. The lot of the housewife has now been made harder on aeount of a shortage of butter. If the shortage is diie to the dairy companies holding on to supplies in order to benefit by securing the new price for old stocks, it" is due to the Board of Trade to take action to prevent any exploitation of this kind. Judging . by what has happened in some places, such as the reduction"' by one company of the amount of butter supplied to a sawmill firm, it would appear that the shortage is more artificial than real, and has been created for purposes of gain. If the dairy companies show any inclination to use their powers of control to thus penalise the workers and their families, they are not likely to receive either public sympathy or support if the workers decide to have the position regulated by the means which are within their powers.
