Two leéiding firms announce a reduction by threepence per pound. For some time rice has been practicaly unprocurable, but the position has been relieved by the annual shipment. T MR WATTS RESIGNS. LQNDON, June 8. Mr W. A. Watt, Australian Commonwealth Treasurer, who is now on a political and financial mission to London, has resigned from the Federal Cabinet. He states that the reason for his resignation is that telegrams exchanged since arrival indicate variance with his colleagues on important issues connected with his mission. is Received 10.50 a.m. SYDNEY, This Day. Interviewed at Wa’gga Mr Hughes disclaims all knowledge of Mr Watts’ resignation or reasons for it. The newspapers’ reports fairly astounded him ,as Mr Watt had even boasted of the extended powers conferred on him. Mr Hughes is awaiting official advice_ He added: The news would not,aifect his country holiday. Several Ministers interviewed expressed surprise and astonishment. They are entirely in the dark. Some quarters suggest friction between Mr Hughes and Mr Watts; others attribute the action to therecent Federal salaries grab, over _which there is much heart-burning throughout Victoria. The master was instrusted to burn flares at the masthead and assist the Search steamers.
