i In Presenting the first annual report and balanbe-sheet, the Chairman Stat‘?-d=""“‘I have -much pleasure in vPl'os9nis“g *0 3'01! the first annual repol't~ot' the newly constituted Public I.ib:'al'y. You will bear in mind that it» has been :2. broken year, indeed, 1955 than six months since proceedings were begun. What success _.l'ms been attained is due to the work of members of the Committee, who have worked willingly and generously in every way necessary, particularly may I mention the two secretaries. I am very sorry to learn, and I know you will be when you hear it, that Miss Wild is leaving this town in a few days. In the year‘ before us the work began must becontinued, as well as making'aclvancc—ment in various direc-tions. More books, more subscribers, and more papers are necessary, but more import--ant still is the need for greater facilities for the changing of books by members. This means more frequcnt--ly opening the lending library to members, which‘ca.n only be done when a proper librarian is engaged. This is not an imposssibility by any means, and I would advise the incoming committee to tackle this problem at once and get it settled, for on it the wholeinstitution depends for anything likesatisfaction to the public. The work of cataloguing the books was ably carried out by some members of the committee. It was a heavy task. and they deserve great praise for doing it and Qor doing it so well. Attention must next be fixed on the reading room, which can be made much more complete with a little aitention and expense. Every member ought to take a lively interest in the institution and‘ endeavour to extend its usefulness by encouraging their friends to become-~ members. Our thanks are due to the local Press for their cordial assistance in‘ all matters affecting the Library, and especially for their articles on theinstitution published a few days ago. I thank the committee for the way they have Workedwith me, and though I am_,'and will be always ready to‘ foster any institution beneficial to theBorough, I feelit my duty to say that: I am not. offering my services as chairman or committeeman at this election.‘ ——-W. F. Stent, chairman.” "' The following committee was elected" to bear oflice through the ensuing’ year:—Chairman (pro tem), Mr’ McNickle; secretary, Miss Fraser; treasurer, Mr E. Pratt; buying Colnmittee, Messrs Pratt, Sharland, and Miss Fraser; other members, Mrs De Lautour, Messrs Ongley, Clemencc, MacRae, Strong; Borough Delegate, Mr Fookes. ‘
It "was ’ arranged that fill. "further notice, the Library will be open three evenings and two af’te.moons weekly,‘ the times being as follows: Monday, .Thul's,day, 'z'i'n‘d Saturday. 7 p.m. to 8.30 p.m., VVednesd:ly, 3.30 pm. to“ 4.30 p.m., Saturday 2.30 to 4.30 p.m.
A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Stout and Miss Wild, on their retirement, for the good work they had done during the year; also to Mr Strong and 23. lady, for their genorous donation of a picture each for the purpose of beautifying the lending room.
