PAYING UNDER AWARD WAGES.

AN INTERESTING POINT.

DANNEVIRKE, this day

A case of interest to employers and employees came before Mr Free, in which the Inspector of Awards proceeded against the |.Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Co-op. Association for a. penalty of £lO on each of two char-ges of not paying the award rate to two employees in the g'roeery departinent. The evidence showed that one concerned agreed, owing to ill health, and the desire to retain his ‘position. to work at some shillings a week less than the award rate, but the permission of the Labour Department had not been obtained to the arrangement. When 9. new manager of the firm. was appointed, he applied to the department. for permission to continue paying under the award rate, which was how the department became acquainted with the breach. The Inspector of Awards said the case was brought to show there must be no agreement between employers and employees to accept lower Wages than the award granted, unless the consent. of the

iabour Department was obtained thereto. A. fine of £5 on one charge and £lO on the other was imposed. .
