' v LONDON, Sept. 10. Through colliding with a Japanese steamer' in a fog, the Marathon was beached at Dhngeness. She was not seriously damaged, and all passengers were saved
FURTHER PARTICULARS. LONDON, Sept. 10. The Marathon experienced a thick fog all up the Channel and collided with the Htnjinmaru in the early morning. The latter was not damaged, and anchored in the Downs. The Marathon had two holds flooded. The passengers were transferred to tugs and landed at Dover. Nobcdy was injured.
EYE-WITNESS’ NARRATIVE.
Received 9.10 a.m. LONDON, Sept. 11. - Mr J. Thornton, an Australian, who is proceeding co Oxford, was aboard the Marathon In the collision with the Japanese vessel Hcijin Marn Interviewed, Mr Thornton said the Japanese ship’s bow r s missed the passengers’ quarters by a few feet, and struck a hold full of wool, which deadened the impact. The Herjin Manx immediately freed herself. There was a great inrush of water, and the Marathon listed heavily. Fortunately no panic occurred. and the passengers quietly assembled on the deck and some assisted the •crew'. It took two hours to till the breach in the ship’s side, blankets, mattresses and pillows being used.
