DUNEDIN April 7.

The difficulty at the Eoslyn woollen mills has apparently reached an acute state. In the beginning twelve men and two boys left employment as a protest against the decision of the management to employ a new sub-foreman. A mass meeting of imill 4han<Js =on Saturday night unanimously decided that negotiation for settlement be opened up, and also resolved, with one dissentient, in favour of supporting the hands who are out.

THE PARKINSON CASE

RELEASE OF WOMEN ASKED FOR

WELLINGTON, April 8

A deputation waited on the Minister for Justice, asking for the release of Alice Parkinson, who was found guilty, in Napier, in 1915, of the manslaughter of Albert West, and sentenced \t|o life imprisonment. There was eviidenco that Parkinson had been treated with extreme cruelty by West. The woman had borne a child, and it is alleged that West promised to marry her, but had not kept his promise; 0:1 the contrary, he was keeping company with another woman. Mr Wilford said he did not think the deputation were capable of deciding whether Parkinson had been sufficiently punished. The woman had been tried before a pudgo of wide experience, and Mr Wilford considered it would be wrong for a Minister to review the sentence. The Minister, nevertheless, regretted that there was no law on the Statute Boiok which granted a convicted perso nthe right of appeal on facts. In Mr Wilford's Crimes' Amendment Bill of last year, winch passed the Lower House divisionless, this principle was affirmed, even for a person who pleaded guilty. The Bill Avas lost 'in the Legislative Council, otherwise Parkinson case would have been reviewed by 'the Court of Appeal.
