TAIHAPE AND DISTRICT PATRIOTIC SOCIETY.
A meeting of the General Committee was held in the Town Hall supperroom on .Monday evening, 10th June. His Worship the Mayor presided, and there were 21 members present. Notice of motion given by Mr. R. Campbell to rescind resolution of 29th May in regard to returned soldiers' sub-committee, was allowed to lapse, owing to Mr. Campbell's absence. The report of the Executive Comruittee was read by the chairman, who moved its adoption, seconded by Mr Bray and carried. The report shoved that one soldier in camp and another who goes into r»amp shortly had been assisted with their application to the Financial Assistance Board for financial assistance. fie widow of a >3i'.». ish soldier killed in France had been financially assisted. The report of the returned soldiers' sub-committee was read by Mr. James, who moved its adoption, seconded by Mr. Neagle and carried. This subcommittee has held five meetings since last report and has dealt with 19 applications; one soldier's claim for a railway pass has been successfully dealt with; another who had "lost his pay book has been assisted in obtaining his final payment. Work has been secured for one applcant. Financial assistance has been granted in two cases, while one soldier who was in receipt of a monthly grant has written that he is not in need of further assistance. In four cases a mufti allowance has been granted, three have been declined, and two deferred awaiting particulars. In two cases assistance has been given with application for pension. In one case the committee has acted on behalf of another patriotic society, and one soldier is being assisted with his application for an artificial limb. Several recently returned men have either been written to or seen by the Secretary, The treasurer's report showed that the total funds controlled by the Society stands at £1163 2s. A contribution of £25 has been received from the Rangitikei General and Co-opera-tive Timber Coy., and £lO has been donated to the Y.M.C.A.
Since last meeting the accounts of the Society have been audited and found correct. The reception and visiting committee reported having met a number of returned soldiers on their arrival at tn? railway station. Mr. Aldridge, who retired by ballot from this committee nominated Mr. C. Gibbs as his successor. The committee decided to adopt the recommendation of the Advisory Board in regard to contributions to Regimental funds. Letters of thanks and appreciation from England for contributions for Naval dependants were read. A circular letter was received from the Discharged Soldiers' information Department, dealing with the training of disabled soldiers in new trades and industries. The Secretary was direct- ! ed to send a copy to the Returned Sol diers' Association. The Minister of Defence wrote, asking the assistance of the committee in obtaining material for use in compiling "A History of the N. Z. Expeditionary Force/ 'from the point of view of the soldiers who actually served with the Force. ""■ The chairman announced that ne would be pleased to receive and forward any useful material, photos, letters and diaries to the proper quarters. A vote of thanks to the chair terminated the meeting.
