DEATH FROM METAL EXPLOSION, AUCKLAND, this day. William H. Scott, a fireman employed at H. Parker and Co's engmeering works, died at the hospital from injuries caused by an explosion of molten metal raked out of the fur. nace with the ashes. ITALIAN VICTORIA CROSS. WON BY NEW ZEALANDER. " WELLINGTON, this day.~* Mr. Christopher Smith, of Wellington, has received word that his son Aubrey has been awarded the Italian decoration "Valorea Militaris," corresponding to the British Victoria Cross; also that he has been made tL member of the British Empire Order.Smith left three years ago. After a few months in France he went to Italy and served as a volunteer transport officer, where tie has been ever .since. The action for which the decoration was bestowed was performed a year ago, but its nature is not yet known here.
