HOCKEY.

o OLD GIRLS VERSUS D. H SCHOOL A very interesting and fast hockey match was played between the Old Girls and the School on the "Rec." yesterday afternoon, both teams showing considerable improvement. On starting the play was up and down the field, the school being first to register, A. Buckley scoring, off a good dribble. The Old Girls then rallied, putting in some neat passes, D. Leahy being prominent near the goal. The ball was ser.t from the left wing across to the right, and smartly returned to ceritre by B. Richards, where Miss Jones registered a goal. The play from this on was very fast, the school team having advantage owing to their better condition; however, the Old i Girls put up a solid defence, Miss McAuliffe, who was playing up to her usual standard, repeatedly saving her side. But the school kept fcip the pressure, and eventually, after a fine forward rush Miss Spooner scored—2 1. Evidently on their mettle, the Old Girls started to make the play lively and after some good hockey and hard play Miss Jones registered a goal, making the scores even. Encouraged by their success the Old Girls again took control, and had the school team all out defending but it was done successfully, and the ball was always got back into safe territory, the game finally ending in midfield, with the scores 2 goals each. The Old Girls, Misses Leahy, Richards, McAuliffe, McLaughlan and. Swenson showed up prominently and for the School Misses Sponner, RMiller, E, Burrell, M. Campbell, and A. B'uckly, Mr Wilson refereed and gave every satisfaction. The game was fast and willing and at times the combination of both was brilliant. (With a little more coaching in the finer points of the game both teams should give a good exposition of hockey It is stated that the Old Girls contemplate challenging the Huias for the coveted Huia Cup, and on their play in yesterday's match, they would be a hard team to beat, therefore an interesting game for the spectators

should result, as both, teams have "tickets" on themselves.

A meeting of the Huia team was held last night to consider a request from the Huntervillc Club to play a match at Hunterville on June 20th. Owing to the Hulas' social being held on that night the request was declined The fact that the Huia Challenge Cup was open to competition was brought under the notice of the Hunterville team and they will probably put in a claim for the trophy. The Huias put in a good practice yesterday afternoon. Arrangements have been made for the Huia Social on the 20th inst., and from the way in which the tickets are going off the success of the function is assured.

The Huias were pleasantly surprised on receiving a refund of the amusement tax levied on their last social, the Commissioner of Taxes, stating that the tax was not levied on receipts from dances.
