She will serf* ously need German sympathy and s&jK port after the war against the AngloSaxons’ claims. Japan’s policy in German settlers and merchants out of China will directly encourage them to go to Australia,, which, under their powerful interest, would be lost to Japan as a futurecolony. If Japan wanted only to outrage German rights in China, Germany would be compelled out of revenge tobar Japan’s way to the Australiancontinent, which Japan covets. ARCHBISHOP LEAVING EHEIMS. Sir Charles Wade, in an article the Nineteenth Century, emphasises that what was originally a matter of protest against the double'income tax has now been converted by the war into a real grievance. The double tax was oppressive to the individual, and also interfered with the development of Imperial resources. The increase in the Australian war tax, combined with the increase in the British tax. compelled' those subjected to the tax to pay 12s 3d. and 12s 6d in the £, Sir C.
