KILLED IN ACTION.

News has been received in Taihape that Rifleman Robert James son of the late Dr. A. Smylie, L.L.D.* and brother of Miss Smylie, of “Eawea, ” Toaroa, was killed in action, somewhere in France, on Bth. May, The deceased was a bright young maa with great prospects for his future; high-spirited, a great favourite and muchly respected by his elders. Whea he enlisted ho was with Mr. Alfred Booth of the Wairarapa. He was only nineteen years of age when he was accepted for the 30th Reinforcements* but being a quick and clever marksman he was re-drafted and sent away with the 27th Rifle Brigade, which left New Zealand last July.- He passed over to France in October, and had just reached his 20th birthday when ho “Went West” as his comrades say. Miss Smylie will have very many friends in this district to share her great sorrow.
