The Committee approved of the recommendation-. WHY WE FIGHT. OTTAWA, May 23. President Wilson has sent the following message to Italy: This great war represents a conflict between selfgovernment and dictation by force. The war's objects are the liberation and freedom of peoples. The right of men and nations to determine their own lives and fortunes. We fight for the maintenance of justice by irresistible force. Free nations are linked to defend mankind. A RUSSO-AMERICAN FORCE TO BE RAISED. Received 11 a.m. NEW YORK, May 24. An influential group of Russians, after a conference with the Bakneteff group, proposes to raise a force of 200,000 Russians in America for service in Siberia. AMERICA IN DEADLY EARNEST. Received 11 a.m. NEW YORK, May 24. The Senate Military Affairs Committee adopted a resolution authorising the President to draft the maximum number of men trainable and equippable each year until the successful termination of the war.
